Provost Badia Ahad has announced the start of the search for a new dean at Emory University’s Candler School of Theology. The incoming dean will replace Jonathan Strom, who is stepping down at the end of his term this summer to return to full-time faculty work.
A 15-member advisory committee has been formed to oversee the selection process. The committee includes faculty, administrators, staff, students, and church leaders. It is co-chaired by Kimberly Jacob Arriola, dean of Laney Graduate School and vice provost for graduate affairs, and Ian McFarland, Robert W. Woodruff Professor of Theology. The committee has published a formal job description and created a dedicated website for candidates.
“Candler’s deep connection to Emory’s identity, and our collective mission to pursue knowledge in the service of humanity, make this deanship a critical leadership role not only for the school, but for the university as a whole,” said Ahad. “I am excited to begin this process as we identify a visionary leader who will advance Candler’s mission, foster theological scholarship and elevate the educational experience of our students.”
The search began with listening sessions in November 2025 that involved stakeholders from both Candler and other parts of Emory University to gather feedback on desired qualities in the next leader.
“The thoughtful contributions and strong engagement in these sessions are reflective of how invested this community is in selecting a leader who will honor and expand upon Candler’s strong foundation,” said Arriola.
Candler School of Theology was founded in 1914. It currently serves over 500 students with more than 40 full-time faculty members and 60 staff. The dean oversees all administrative matters including academic programming, student experience, finances, alumni relations, philanthropy efforts, community outreach, and institutional collaboration.
“Our goal is to identify a leader who will amplify Candler’s academic mission, maintain and strengthen ties with The United Methodist Church and other churches, bolster student resources and attract and retain eminent faculty,” said McFarland.
Emory University has partnered with executive search firm Heidrick & Struggles to assist with recruiting candidates alongside the advisory committee. Members of the university community are invited to participate by submitting nominations or applications through the search website or via email at EmoryCandlerDean@heidrick.com.
