DeKalb County has activated a comprehensive response plan in anticipation of severe winter weather, operating under a declared State of Emergency. The county is working with various departments and external partners to ensure public safety and the continuity of essential services.

The DeKalb County Emergency Operations Center is leading the effort through virtual operations and regular briefings with agencies responsible for public safety, public works, utilities, and other partners. Officials are monitoring the situation and adjusting plans as weather conditions develop.

Crews from Public Works have applied ice melt at county facilities, sidewalks, and building entrances. Priority was given to locations such as police stations, fire stations, hospitals, warming centers, and other critical sites. Backup generators and heating equipment have been installed at key locations including frontline service centers and the animal shelter. Tree contractors and debris removal teams are on standby to address any downed trees or blocked roadways.

Both Fire Rescue and Police departments in DeKalb County have confirmed their readiness ahead of the storm. Emergency vehicles have been equipped for hazardous roads; generators are tested and fueled; personnel and equipment are pre-positioned to enable rapid response if needed.

The county is also coordinating efforts with state and regional organizations. The Georgia Department of Transportation has completed brining operations on roads and bridges throughout the metro area. Georgia Power has crews ready across the region to respond to potential power outages. The Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency has activated its State Operations Center to support local government response efforts.

Weather forecasts indicate that a major winter storm with ice accumulation will create dangerous travel conditions in the area. There is an increased risk of downed trees, power outages, prolonged cold exposure, frozen pipes, especially where electricity may be lost.

County officials advise residents to avoid unnecessary travel during this period, prepare for possible power outages, protect water pipes and pets from freezing temperatures, and stay informed through official DeKalb County communication channels for updates.

Updates will continue as conditions change throughout the duration of the storm.
