DeKalb County opens warming centers as temperatures drop

DeKalb County will open several warming centers starting at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, December 19, 2025, in response to expected freezing temperatures and hazardous wind chills. The county announced that the following locations will be available for residents seeking shelter from the cold:

– Frontline Response International, 2585 Gresham Rd SE, Atlanta
– St. Vincent de Paul, 2050-C Chamblee Tucker Rd, Chamblee
– Exchange Park Intergenerational Center, 2771 Columbia Dr, Decatur
– Mason Mill Recreation Center, 340 McConnell Dr, Decatur

Transportation services to these centers will begin with pickups originating from Frontline Response Headquarters (2585 Gresham Rd SE, Atlanta), with initial pickups scheduled to be completed by 7:30 p.m. Afterward, final sweeps will continue until 10 p.m., ending promptly at that time.

The transportation pickup schedule includes four routes covering North DeKalb/Chamblee-Tucker; Central/Decatur/Emory; East/Stone Mountain/Candler; and South Central/Memorial Dr/Wesley Chapel areas. Each route stops at multiple community locations such as libraries and shopping centers before reaching the warming centers.

Frontline Response International is contracted by DeKalb County to assist individuals in need during extreme weather events. People can arrive directly at Frontline HQ beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Friday for help with warming center placement and additional services.

According to data from the Georgia Department of Education, enrollment in DeKalb County schools dropped by 2.2% during the 2022-23 school year compared to the previous year (https://www.gadoe.org/). In total, DeKalb County schools enrolled approximately 98,287 students during that period (https://www.gadoe.org/). White students made up about 14% of the student body during the same school year (https://www.gadoe.org/).
