DeKalb County opens warming centers amid freezing weather forecast

DeKalb County has announced the opening of several warming centers in response to expected freezing temperatures and hazardous wind chills. The centers will operate from 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 22, through Wednesday, February 25.

The locations available during this period include Exchange Park Intergenerational Center in Decatur, Frontline Response International in Atlanta, Tobie Grant Recreation Center in Scottdale, and St. Vincent de Paul in Chamblee.

All transportation routes for the warming centers will begin at Frontline Response Headquarters (2585 Gresham Rd SE, Atlanta) starting at 6:00 p.m., with initial pickups completed by 7:30 p.m. Final sweep operations will continue until 10:00 p.m., when all routes conclude.

Transportation is provided for DeKalb County residents according to a set schedule with four main routes serving North DeKalb/Chamblee Tucker; Central/Decatur/Emory; East/Stone Mountain/Candler; and South Central/Memorial/Wesley Chapel areas. Pickups start at various community locations such as senior centers, libraries, MARTA stations, churches, and shopping plazas.

Frontline Response International is contracted by DeKalb County to assist individuals needing shelter during periods of extreme weather.

For those seeking early entry access to shelter, individuals may arrive directly at Frontline Response Headquarters daily at noon from Sunday through Tuesday during the activation period.

According to data from the Georgia Department of Education, enrollment at DeKalb County schools decreased by 2.2% in the 2022-23 school year compared to the previous year (source). The total number of students enrolled was reported as 98,287 (source). Black students made up the largest group within the county’s student body at 55.7%, followed by Hispanic students at 20.1% (source). White students represented about 14%, while multiracial students were the least represented group at just over three percent (source).
