DeKalb County opens warming centers amid cold weather; provides transportation options

DeKalb County will open warming centers from February 4 to February 8, 2026, in response to predicted freezing temperatures and hazardous wind chills. The centers will begin operations at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 4, and remain open until Sunday morning, with services ending each day at 10:00 a.m.

Three locations will serve as warming centers during this period: Exchange Park Intergenerational Center in Decatur, Frontline Response International on Gresham Road in Atlanta, and Tobie Grant Recreation Center in Scottdale. These sites will operate around the clock throughout the activation period.

Transportation for residents needing access to these centers will be provided by DeKalb County. All routes originate from Frontline Response Headquarters at 2585 Gresham Rd SE in Atlanta. Initial pickups start at 6:00 p.m., with all routes concluding by 10:00 p.m. There are four designated transportation routes covering North DeKalb/Chamblee-Tucker, Central/Decatur/Emory, East/Stone Mountain/Candler, and South Central/Memorial Dr/Wesley Chapel areas.

Residents can also arrive directly at Frontline Response Headquarters daily starting at noon from February 4 through February 7 for early entry access.

Frontline Response International is contracted by DeKalb County to provide support for individuals during extreme weather conditions. For transportation or coordination assistance, residents may contact Frontline Response Dispatch at 404-334-3610 or visit the headquarters location.

In other developments related to DeKalb County schools, enrollment dropped by 2.2% during the 2022-23 school year compared to the previous year according to data from the Georgia Department of Education (https://www.gadoe.org/). The total student enrollment was reported as 98,287 students for that academic year (https://www.gadoe.org/). Black students made up the largest ethnic group at 55.7%, followed by Hispanic students at 20.1% (https://www.gadoe.org/), White students at 14%, and multiracial students represented the smallest group at 3.3% (https://www.gadoe.org/).
