DeKalb County officials are urging residents to exercise caution as winter weather is forecasted to affect the region this weekend. The county expects snow and dangerously cold winds starting late Saturday afternoon and continuing through Sunday morning, with below-zero wind chills predicted for much of north Georgia, including DeKalb County.

In response, all county parks and libraries will be closed on Saturday and Sunday. Recreation center programming is also cancelled during this period. Officials said that county leadership is working across departments and with state and regional partners to ensure public safety, infrastructure readiness, and continuity of essential services.

Residents are advised to use care when utilizing alternative heat sources, as improper use can result in dangerous carbon monoxide exposure.

DeKalb County encourages residents to follow the “4 P’s” during winter weather events:

“PEOPLE: Ensure family members’ warmth, check on elderly family or neighbors that may need extra blankets, winterizing their homes or a warm place to stay.
PETS: Bring pets inside at night to keep them healthy and safe.
PLANTS: Cover plants to keep them warm at night or bring them inside so they can flourish.
PIPES: Cover exposed pipes to prevent freezing and breaks.”

The county will continue monitoring conditions and provide regular updates as the storm progresses. Residents are encouraged to visit www.dekalbcountyga.gov for the latest information.

Meanwhile, DeKalb County schools enrolled 98,287 students in the 2022-23 school year. Enrollment dropped by 2.2% compared to the previous year according to data from the Georgia Department of Education (https://www.gadoe.org/). White students made up 14% of the student body during that period (https://www.gadoe.org/).
