Canton and Suwanee have been named Georgia Exceptional Main Street (GEMS) communities by the Georgia Main Street Program, which is part of the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. This designation places the two cities among a select group recognized for their efforts in downtown revitalization, economic development, and community innovation.

The GEMS designation is given to cities that demonstrate strong performance in using the Main Street Approach. The approach focuses on preserving local character while encouraging economic growth. Canton and Suwanee were recognized for their achievements in building vibrant downtowns that function as both economic and cultural centers.

Suwanee was highlighted for its public spaces and forward-thinking planning. Canton was noted for progress in small business development, organizing community events, and creating a strong sense of place. The addition of these cities to the GEMS program underscores their leadership in downtown development.

“These cities have shown what’s possible when local leadership, community engagement, and strategic planning come together,” said Cherie Bennett, Director of the Office of Downtown Development at the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. “We are proud to welcome Canton and Suwanee into the GEMS family and look forward to the continued impact they will make across the state.”

GEMS communities are considered leading examples for other cities interested in downtown enhancement through preservation-based economic development. They meet strict performance standards and contribute to the wider goals of the Main Street movement.
